What This Calculator Does
The Volume Calculator and Converter has two tasks on one page: convert a known volume, or calculate a complete solid from dimensions. Geometry covers rectangular prisms, cylinders, spheres and cones with labelled diagrams. The existing cubic and US liquid conversions remain available and update live.
When to Use It
Use conversion mode when the volume is known, and geometry mode when dimensions are known. The route remains conversions/volume; legacy mode=cube prism links remain valid. For packaging or price estimates use concrete or paint.
Inputs Explained
Conversion mode accepts a non-negative volume with source and result units. Prism dimensions are length, width and height. Cylinders and cones use radius and perpendicular height; spheres use radius only. Choose metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet or inches. Mode, shape, dimensions and unit values can be shared in the current URL.
How the Calculation Works
Prism: V=lwh. Cylinder: V=πr²h. Sphere: V=4πr³/3. Cone: V=πr²h/3. Dimensions convert to metres before volume is calculated in m³. One litre is 0.001 m³, one cubic foot is 0.028316846592 m³, and one US gallon is 231 in³ or 3.785411784 L. Liquid conversion does not infer density or mass.
Example
A 2×3×4 m prism has 24 m³ or 24000 L. A cylinder with radius 2 m and height 3 m has 12π≈37.699112 m³. The matching cone has 4π≈12.566371 m³. A sphere with radius 2 m has 32π/3≈33.510322 m³. In conversion mode, 1 US gal gives 3.785412 L when displayed to six decimal places.
How to Understand the Result
The main result uses your target unit, and the grid shows every conversion. Click a unit result to copy its number and label. Changing dimension units preserves the same physical solid. Swapping volume units converts the known number into the new source unit. Empty, invalid and out-of-range input clears the live result.
Common Mistakes
Enter radius rather than diameter. Cone height is perpendicular, not the slant height. Gallons, cups and spoons are US volume measures, not grams, Imperial gallons or every regional cooking cup. The geometry model does not calculate shells, truncated solids, partial filling or wall thickness.
FAQ
Is this a geometry calculator or a liquid converter?
Choose geometric dimensions or a known volume to convert. Convert a known volume between cubic and liquid units. US liquid measures are used.
Should I enter radius or diameter?
Use dimensions to calculate geometric volume; radius is half the diameter. Height is perpendicular to the base.
Which gallon is used?
Dimensions change units without changing physical size. Geometry assumes complete solids. US gallons, cups and spoons are volume units, not weight; no Imperial units or material density is assumed.
Notes
Known volume is limited to 0–1e12 m³; geometric volume to 1e−15–1e12 m³. Each numeric dimension is at most 1e9 and its converted length must be 1e−9 to 1e9 m. Display uses up to six decimal places and floating-point arithmetic rather than symbolic π. Existing small-unit factors are retained, with minor rounded-factor differences possible. See the NIST capacity and volume table. Sharing uses URL inputs, without a separate stored calculator-history database.
