What This Calculator Does

This gematria calculator converts letters into numbers and adds their values. English mode displays English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Reduction together. Hebrew mode uses Hebrew Standard, also called Mispar Hechrachi. Select a result row or use the dropdown to inspect individual letter values and the complete alphabet chart.

When to Use It

Use it to check a name or phrase, learn a letter-number mapping, or compare two texts under the same cipher. A numerical match is an arithmetic result, not an interpretation of what those texts mean.

Inputs Explained

  • Alphabet: Choose English or Hebrew. Switching retains your text and recalculates it with the new alphabet. Try example loads a phrase appropriate for the selected alphabet.
  • Word or phrase: Results update as you type. Each field accepts up to 500 UTF-16 code units, as measured by the browser. English mode accepts A–Z without case distinctions; Hebrew mode counts only the listed Hebrew letters.
  • Compare with: An optional second text, with the same length limit. Each result row in the comparison shows both totals and whether they match.
  • Ignored characters: Spaces, punctuation, digits and unsupported characters add no value. Unsupported letters, numbers and symbols are listed beside the input. Accented letters are not transliterated: café counts only c, a and f. Empty input or input without supported letters produces a prompt instead of a valid zero result.

The calculator itself does not place entered text in the URL or browser storage. Clear removes both texts while retaining your alphabet and cipher selection.

How the Calculation Works

Let n be an English letter's position, with A=1 through Z=26:

Cipher Value per letter Checkpoints
English Ordinal n A=1, Z=26
Full Reduction ((n−1) mod 9)+1 I=9, J=1, Z=8
Reverse Ordinal 27−n A=26, Z=1
Reverse Reduction ((26−n) mod 9)+1 A=8, Z=1

Questions fréquentes

What is gematria?

Gematria assigns numerical values to letters and adds them. Traditional Hebrew gematria and modern English ciphers use different alphabets and mappings, so always identify the cipher before comparing totals.

Does Full Reduction reduce the final total to one digit?

No. Each letter is reduced to a value from 1 to 9 before adding. The final sum can exceed 9. Hello world has an English Ordinal total of 124 and a Full Reduction total of 52.

Are digits, punctuation and accented letters counted?

English mode counts only A–Z, ignoring case. Digits, spaces, punctuation, accented letters and other characters add no value; accents are not transliterated. Hebrew mode counts Hebrew letters and ignores vowel marks.

Which values are used for Hebrew final letters?

Hebrew Standard (Mispar Hechrachi) assigns ך, ם, ן, ף and ץ the values 20, 40, 50, 80 and 90, matching their regular forms. This calculator does not use the extended 500–900 final-letter values.

What does a matching total mean?

It means only that the two texts have the same numerical sum under a particular cipher. It does not establish a real-world connection or predict events. The calculator does not offer symbolic readings or a matching-word database.
