What This Calculator Does

The Running Pace Calculator solves time, distance or pace from the other two. It supports kilometres and miles, shows both pace units and average km/h, and includes 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon distance buttons. A table gives constant-pace splits, including the final partial unit.

When to Use It

Use it to check a run, convert a finish-time target to pace or calculate distance at a fixed pace. The model does not predict fitness, race performance or training safety. For other speed units see the speed converter.

Inputs Explained

Choose the value to solve and fill the other two. Time accepts M:SS or H:MM:SS; 25:00 means 25 minutes. Pace accepts M:SS per selected distance unit. Hours and minutes must be non-negative integers; seconds may include a decimal but must be below 60. Minutes in three-part time must also be below 60. Time and distance must be positive.

Enter distance from your measurement or run record, without assuming that a device display guarantees course accuracy. Pace conversion changes time per length unit while preserving total elapsed time. Whether stops are included depends on the elapsed-time record you enter; the calculator does not deduct pauses.

A partial final unit remains in the table. For 2.5 km at five minutes per kilometre, two splits take five minutes each and the final half kilometre takes two minutes thirty seconds, for 12:30 total. The distance column is cumulative, while split time describes only that segment.

How the Calculation Works

Pace = time/distance; time = distance×pace; distance = time/pace. One mile is 1.609344 km, so seconds per mile = seconds per kilometre×1.609344. Speed in km/h = kilometres/seconds×3600. Every split uses that same unrounded pace; a final partial unit takes its proportional time.

Example

For 5 km in 25:00, 1500/5=300 seconds per kilometre: 5:00/km. Mile pace is 482.8032 seconds, displayed as 8:03/mile; speed is 12 km/h. At 5:00/km, 42.195 km takes 12658.5 seconds, displayed as 3:30:59. The half-marathon preset is 21.0975 km rather than 21 km.

How to Understand the Result

The large number follows the selected solve mode. Displayed durations round to the nearest second while arithmetic keeps unrounded values. Rounded split times may differ by a second from the rounded cumulative total. Changing distance units converts valid distance and pace inputs to preserve the physical run.

Common Mistakes

Decimal 5.5 minutes means 5:30, not 5:50. Two-part time means minutes and seconds; three-part time means hours, minutes and seconds. A pace of 5 min/km is not 5 min/mile.

FAQ

How do I enter time and pace?

Use M:SS or H:MM:SS for elapsed time and M:SS for pace. Seconds must be below 60.

Are marathon presets in kilometres?

The standard presets are 5 km, 10 km, 21.0975 km and 42.195 km; mile mode converts those distances.

What does the last partial split mean?

Each split covers one selected distance unit; the final partial split is proportional. Times are rounded to the nearest second.

Notes

Converted distance is bounded at 1e−6 to 1000 km, elapsed time at 31536000 seconds and pace at 86400 seconds per selected unit. Derived values must satisfy the same limits. Split tables contain at most about 1000 rows. Inputs are not saved as run records. The presets follow the distances listed by World Athletics; this does not certify a race course or performance.
