What This Calculator Does
The Paint Calculator estimates four walls and an optional ceiling in a rectangular room. It deducts the total openings area, applies the coat count and uses the product coverage you enter. Results include litres, US gallons, whole buckets and optional material cost.
When to Use It
Use it for an initial purchase estimate for room walls, the ceiling or both. Multiple rooms must be calculated separately. For flooring use the flooring calculator; for volume alone use the volume converter. This is not a general multi-region wall-measurement tool.
Inputs Explained
Length and width must be positive; height is needed when walls are selected. Feet use ft² for openings and coverage; metres use m². Openings must be non-negative and smaller than the chosen gross area. Coats are an integer from 1 to 20. Enter the specific product’s coverage per single coat per litre or US gallon and its bucket volume. Neither is supplied as a universal default. Price is optional.
Measure each opening separately and add its area once. When both walls and ceiling are selected, the entered total is deducted from their combined area; use openings that belong to that selected job.
Product labels may describe coverage per litre per coat or total coverage per bucket. This tool requires single-coat coverage per selected volume unit. If a five-litre bucket covers forty square metres for one coat, enter eight square metres per litre, then enter the bucket size and coat count separately.
How the Calculation Works
Walls = 2×(length+width)×height. Ceiling = length×width. Net area = selected gross area−openings. Total coated area = net area×coats. Paint volume = coated area/coverage. Buckets = ceiling(volume/bucket size). A US gallon is 231 in³, equivalent to 3.785411784 L.
Example
A 12×10×8 ft room has 352 ft² of walls. Deduct 32 ft² of openings for 320 ft² per coat. Two coats total 640 ft². At an illustrative 350 ft²/US gal, paint needed is 1.828571 US gal, approximately 6.921896 L. One-gallon buckets require 2 buckets; an example price of 35 each gives cost 70. These inputs are examples, not a product guarantee or quote.
How to Understand the Result
The required quantity remains unrounded; purchased volume uses whole buckets. Changing length units converts dimensions, openings and coverage. Changing litres and US gallons converts both bucket size and coverage basis to preserve the same job. Any edit clears the previous result.
Common Mistakes
Do not enter coverage for two coats as single-coat coverage and multiply it again. Openings are entered as one total area. US and Imperial gallons differ. Ceiling-only mode ignores height; keep room length and wall height distinct.
FAQ
Which coverage should I enter?
Use the product’s coverage per single coat. Openings are subtracted once before multiplying by coats.
How are doors and windows handled?
Use the product’s coverage per single coat. Openings are subtracted once before multiplying by coats.
Why is the purchased volume larger?
Paint volume is net area × coats ÷ coverage. Buckets round up; costs use whole buckets.
Notes
Converted dimensions are 1e−9 to 1e9 m; gross area is 1e−12 to 1e12 m², required paint 1e−12 to 1e12 L, buckets at most 1e9, price 0–1e12 and cost at most 1e15. Product and substrate affect actual coverage. No automatic waste, primer, labor, delivery or tax is included. Inputs are not persisted. See the NIST capacity table for US measures.
