What This Calculator Does

The Flooring and Tile Calculator estimates whole boxes or tiles from a measured net area, a waste allowance and product coverage. Tile mode uses tile dimensions and optionally tiles per box. An optional unit price adds a material budget based on what you buy.

When to Use It

Use it after measuring your floor. Combine shapes and subtract excluded regions with square footage. For depth-based materials use concrete. This tool plans area coverage rather than material volume.

Inputs Explained

Net area must be positive in ft² or m². Waste is 0–100%; the editable 10% default is an example, not a universal recommendation. Box mode uses the package’s coverage per box. Tile mode uses positive length and width in inches, centimetres, feet or metres. Optional tiles per box must be an integer from 1 to 1e6. Leave prices blank to omit cost, or enter zero for free material.

Whether doorways, fixed cabinets or other regions should be deducted depends on the actual installation scope. The calculator cannot identify these regions automatically. Add covered regions and subtract exclusions first, then enter the measured net area. Waste allowance and surplus caused by whole-package rounding are separate.

Set the editable ten-percent example to zero to inspect the base purchase quantity, or enter the allowance agreed for your project. Layout direction, material and room boundaries can affect waste; this calculator does not choose the appropriate allowance for a particular installation.

How the Calculation Works

Required area = net area×(1+waste/100). Boxes = ceiling(required area/box coverage). Tile area = length×width. Tile count rounds up first; when a package size is given, box count rounds up again. Purchased area uses the actual purchased pieces. Only floating-point noise close to an exact integer is ignored.

Example

For 120 ft² with 10% waste and 20 ft² per box, required area is 132 ft². Buy ceiling(132/20)=7 boxes covering 140 ft². At an illustrative price of 30 per box, material cost is 210. For 10 m² with no waste and 30×30 cm tiles, 112 tiles are needed; boxes of 10 require 12 boxes, providing 120 tiles and 10.8 m².

How to Understand the Result

The main result is the purchase quantity. Required coverage includes waste; purchased coverage adds package rounding. Needed tiles and tiles inside purchased boxes can differ. Unit changes convert valid areas and dimensions to preserve the physical quantity; they do not exchange currencies.

Common Mistakes

Do not use package weight as coverage. Grout gaps and cutting patterns are not included. If the manufacturer supplies actual box coverage, box mode may be more appropriate. With a tile package size entered, the price field means price per box, not per tile.

FAQ

How is waste included?

Required area includes waste. Quantities round up; optional tile boxes round up again. Costs use purchased units.

Why buy more coverage than the net area?

Required area includes waste. Quantities round up; optional tile boxes round up again. Costs use purchased units.

Does tile mode plan the cutting layout?

No cutting layout, grout gaps, labor, delivery or tax is included. Prices use one currency of your choice; no currency conversion.

Notes

Required area and each piece or package area are bounded at 1e−12 to 1e12 m². Quantity is at most 1e9, purchased area and cost at most 1e15, and unit price 0–1e12. Dimensions follow the geometry-tool limits. No cutting layout, labor, delivery or taxes are included. Inputs stay in page state and displayed decimals are limited to six.
