What This Calculator Does

The Gravel Calculator estimates volume from footprint and depth, then estimates weight using bulk density. Results separate base volume, extra material and the total with allowance. Cubic metres, cubic yards, metric tonnes and US short tons are shown; an optional unit price adds a material cost estimate.

When to Use It

Use it for an initial material estimate for paths, landscaping beds and other uniform-depth gravel layers. It does not choose a suitable depth, design drainage or determine structural load capacity. Select the depth required for your project and confirm density and material condition with the supplier.

The starting density of 1600 kg/m³ is an editable example, not a specification for every gravel. Use a decimal point or comma without grouping separators. For example, 1,600 means 1.6 here: enter sixteen hundred as 1600. Scientific notation and text containing unit suffixes are not accepted.

Changing the unit system converts valid dimensions, depth and density while retaining the price and its explicitly selected basis. Editing a field clears the previous result until you calculate again. Reset restores metric units, 5 cm depth, 1600 kg/m³ example density, zero allowance, empty dimensions and price, a per-tonne price basis and USD. Inputs are not saved in the URL or browser storage.

How the Calculation Works

Convert measurements to metres: centimetres ÷ 100, feet × 0.3048 and inches × 0.0254.

  • Rectangle area = length × width.
  • Circle area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)².
  • Base volume = area × depth.
  • Extra volume = base volume × allowance ÷ 100.
  • Order estimate = base volume + extra volume.
  • Weight = order estimate × bulk density.
  • Cost = allowance-adjusted quantity in the selected pricing unit × unit price.

One cubic yard is 0.764554857984 m³; one pound is 0.45359237 kg. Divide kilograms by 1000 for metric tonnes or 907.18474 for US short tons. The calculation breakdown uses metric values consistently, even when inputs use US units.

Example

A metric gravel layer

A rectangle is 10 m long and 3 m wide, with a depth of 5 cm. Use an example bulk density of 1600 kg/m³, a 10% allowance and USD 60 per metric tonne:

  1. Area = 10 × 3 = 30 m².
  2. Base volume = 30 × 0.05 = 1.50 m³.
  3. Extra material = 1.50 × 10% = 0.15 m³.
  4. Total volume = 1.50 + 0.15 = 1.65 m³, about 2.158 yd³.
  5. Weight = 1.65 × 1600 = 2640 kg, or 2.64 tonnes.
  6. Material cost = 2.64 × 60 = USD 158.40.

US customary units

A 27 ft × 1 ft area at 12 in depth occupies 27 ft³, or exactly 1 yd³. At an example density of 100 lb/ft³ and zero allowance, it weighs 2700 lb, or 1.35 US short tons. At USD 50 per US short ton, the cost is USD 67.50.

For a circular example, a 4 m diameter gives an area of about 12.566 m². At 5 cm depth with no allowance, volume is about 0.628 m³. Enter the diameter, not the radius.

How to Understand the Result

The large volume already includes the allowance. Weight and cost use that same adjusted quantity; Base volume excludes it. Metric mode emphasizes m³ and tonnes, while US mode emphasizes yd³ and US short tons. The alternate measures are also available.

Ordinary results show up to three decimal places. Very small or large values use scientific display notation, and cost shows two decimal places. Calculations use unrounded numbers, so multiplying a rounded displayed weight by price may differ slightly. Copy result includes area, depth, density, allowance and any entered pricing terms.

The calculator does not round an order to whole truckloads, tons or bags. It uses floating-point arithmetic with explicit bounds to prevent overflow or effectively zero output: derived positive area, depth, density, volume and mass values must stay within the applicable 1e-12 to 1e15 range, and cost cannot exceed 1e15. Out-of-range inputs produce an error.

Common Mistakes

  • Using solid-rock density instead of bulk density, which accounts for gaps between particles.
  • Confusing a cubic yard of volume with a ton of weight, or a metric tonne with a US short ton.
  • Treating 5 cm as 5 m or entering radius in the diameter field.
  • Adding the same allowance to both the measured area and the extra-material percentage.
  • Assuming a currency selection also converts the entered price.

FAQ

How much area does one tonne cover?

Divide mass in kg by density in kg/m³ and depth in metres. At 1600 kg/m³ and 0.05 m depth, one metric tonne covers approximately 12.5 m² before any allowance.

Can I calculate bags?

This tool estimates bulk volume and weight, with pricing by weight or volume. It does not accept bag sizes or round up to whole bags. For bagged gravel, divide by the package's net mass or stated volume and round the purchase count up separately.

Does changing density change the required volume?

No. With fixed area, depth and allowance, volume stays constant. Density changes weight and weight-based cost. A price per cubic metre or cubic yard gives the same cost regardless of density.

How much does a cubic metre of gravel weigh?

It depends on bulk density. At the editable example density of 1600 kg/m³, one cubic metre weighs 1.6 metric tonnes. Use supplier data for your material's grading, moisture and packing state.

Is a tonne the same as a US ton?

No. A metric tonne is 1000 kg. A US short ton is 2000 lb, or 907.18474 kg. Both are labeled separately in the results and pricing options.

Does the allowance calculate compaction?

No. A 10% allowance multiplies the base volume by 1.10 without changing density. Compaction needs a density and specification matched to the material's actual state.

Does the cost include delivery?

No. It is the allowance-adjusted quantity multiplied by the price you enter. Delivery, tax, labor and equipment are excluded. Currency is a label, not an exchange-rate conversion.

How do I handle an irregular area?

Divide it into measurable shapes, add their areas and use Known area. Calculate separate sections individually when their depths or material densities differ.
