Quick guide

What This Calculator Does

The hours calculator compares two explicit datetimes. It first measures the elapsed duration, optionally subtracts one total break duration in minutes, and then shows total time, net work time, and decimal hours.

It is useful for shift checks, scheduling, project duration, contractor billing, and basic timesheet review. It is not a payroll system and does not decide what counts as legal overtime in a particular jurisdiction.

When to Use It

  • You have a start datetime and an end datetime and need the elapsed duration.
  • You want to subtract one lunch or rest period from a shift.
  • You need to convert 7 hours 30 minutes into 7.50 decimal hours.
  • You need to check an overnight shift whose end date is explicitly the next day.

For weekly or monthly totals, multiple breaks, pay calculations, or overtime multipliers, use a timesheet or payroll tool that models those rules directly.

Inputs Explained

Frequently Asked Questions

What results does this tool show?

It shows total elapsed time, net work time after a break deduction, and both hours/minutes and decimal-hour formats.

How should I enter an overnight shift?

Enter the end on the next calendar date; the page does not automatically infer the next day from an earlier end time.

How are breaks deducted?

Check the break option and enter one total break duration in minutes; the page subtracts it from the elapsed minutes.

What is the difference between decimal hours and hours/minutes?

Hours/minutes are for reading, while decimal hours equal total minutes divided by 60 and are useful in timesheets or multiplication.

Does it calculate pay or legal overtime?

No. It calculates elapsed and net hours only; it has no hourly rate, weekly totals, overtime multipliers, holidays, or local labor-law rules.
